Chris Richardson is no longer in the running to be the new “American Idol” - he was voted off the show May 2 - but that isn’t stopping his hometown from celebrating his ascent to fame on the Fox show regularly watched by 30 million viewers.
The city of Chesapeake has planned a celebration Monday at Colon Hall Stadium at Great Bridge High School, where Richardson played football and generally kept his singing talents under wraps. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
Mayor Dalton Edge and School Board Chairman Thomas Mercer Sr. are expected to be on hand to congratulate Richardson for putting their city on the show biz map while competing in the TV singing competition. FM stations WPYA (93.7) and WZNR (106.1) will take part.
Richardson came back to Chesapeake this week from Los Angeles for a visit and also has done some media interviews and appearances.
Because of restrictions placed on contestants by the “American Idol” producers, Richardson is not expected to sing at the welcome-home rally. Richardson is scheduled to return to Los Angeles next week to rehearse for the May 23 “American Idol” finale.
