Jordin Sparks returns to Glendale Arizona for American Idol Celebration
Each year on American Idol, the top 3 finalist return to their hometown for celebration,
activities, along with the FOX American Idol Cameras.
Jordin Sparks and the American Idol film crew will sweep through Glendale on Friday May 11, 2007 to visit the singer’s hometown hangouts and give locals a chance to hear Sparks sing in person.
Voters secured Sparks a spot in the talent show’s semifinal Tuesday when the top three contestants will face off.
On Wednesday night, Idol contestants Blake Lewis and Melinda Doolittle also advanced. Lakisha Jones got the boot.
The hourlong semifinal show will feature the contestants’ performances with taped visits to their hometowns wedged in-between.
When Sparks returns to the Valley, she will do a round of TV and radio spots and attend a pep rally at Sandra Day O’Connor High School, where she was a student. If time allows, she is scheduled to show the camera crew around Arrowhead Town Center, where she held her first job at clothing store Buckle and hung out after school.
At 4 p.m. Friday, Sparks will arrive at Westgate City Center, where she and her family will hop in a motorcade and head toward the center’s AMC Westgate 20. Sparks will jump on a stage and meet Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs before singing, according to Westgate staff.
Professional athletes, cheer squads and mascots from the Arizona Cardinals, Coyotes and Sting are expected to attend. Although the Suns and Diamondbacks are on the road, staff members from each organization will also come out, said city spokeswoman Jennifer Liewer. Sparks has sung the national anthem at games for the teams in years past.
Drawing from previous seasons’ experience, Idol producers told Glendale to expect 10,000 people at Westgate’s “AI pep rally.” Sparks’ fans rejoiced upon hearing her status after Wednesday’s results show on the Fox TV network.
“It’s just great exposure for Glendale,” Beverly Collins said.
On Idol’s Tuesday performance night, more than 1,000 people packed Westgate to watch Sparks, despite the simultaneous broadcast of the Suns game against the San Antonio Spurs.
If Sparks makes the cut next week, she will move on to the Idol finale on May 23. A recording contract with Sony/BMG Music Entertainment awaits the AI winner.
Wednesday night, one Valley viewer got an extra jolt. AI host Ryan Seacrest announced that a Phoenix resident won a viewer contest and received $10,000 and was attending the show at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
