American Idol Lakisha Jones continues to shine on 3-7-07Â
After Wednesday night’s performance by Michigander Lakisha Jones of Flint, she is destined to make the top 12 if not the top 2 overall. She was the sixth performer tonight and injected plenty of pizzazz in a show that started out with some of the weaker competitors.
Consider the praise from the professional judges after she sang Whitney Houston’s “If I Don’t Have You”:
Said Randy Jackson: “Another great performance by the great LaKisha.”
Said Paula Abdul: “You don’t have to run anymore.”
And the hyper-critical Simon Cowell: “Passion, talent, believability,” he said and making up for last week’s criticism of her wardrobe, added “tonight you look beautiful.” She went from a salmon top and denim mini-skirt last week to a chic dress that highlighted her curvy figure on Wednesday.
Of course, her fate is up to the millions of voters who call or text in after the show but it was pretty clear that Jones should have an easy waltz into the group of six who will continue on singing on America’s top-rated TV show.
Jones’ stellar performance went far to upstage the latest “AI” brouhaha. Earlier in the day, Rosie O’Donnell on ABC-TV’s “The View” accused the show for being “sexist or racist and weigh-ist” in allowing Antonella Barba continue on while chasing away the black and rotund Frenchie Davis a couple of competitions ago. Both have been involved in nude photography controversies.
Before Wednesday’s show, “Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe issued a response that said in part “Viewers need only look at the show tonight to realize that ‘American Idol’ constantly confirms to America that talent has nothing to do with weight or color.
