American Idol Chris Richardson of Chesapeake, Va beat the odds.  He made it to the Hollywood Round as one of 172 Golden Ticket winners. Will he have neough to make it to the top 40? We will find out this week.

“They beat the odds.”

So spoke “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest last week when the 172nd and final contestant was selected for the Hollywood round of eliminations, which begin tonight at 8 on Fox.

Fox publicists said more than 100,000 people auditioned in half a dozen cities to appear on the sixth edition of the combination reality series and talent show. Last week “Idol” attracted 33.7 million viewers on Tuesday and 31.8 million on Wednesday.

Among the 172 invited to compete on the stage of the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles is 22-year-old Chris Richardson of Chesapeake, who wowed the judges in the New York City area auditions last month.
His day job is working as a kitchen manager at a Hooters restaurant in Chesapeake.

The producers are mum about what Richardson will sing when he again faces the panel of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. The network is not permitting interviews with the 172 men and women in Los Angles or their families, even though mom and dad are not competing.

The big night in this week’s Hollywood round of eliminations is Wednesday at 9 when the final 24 contestants will be selected - 12 men, 12 women.

For what it’s worth, Reality TV Magazine did not include Richardson in its editors’ picks of the final 24.

“In Hollywood,” Seacrest said, “the contestants face the most merciless test of their talent and character. It will be the most ruthless competition yet. When we searched the country for talent, the auditions brought out the largest crowds we’ve seen - and the best talent we’ve seen.”

Sounds like hype. Starting tonight, you can judge for yourself how the talent in “American Idol” compares to the singers of the past auditions.

The top 12 male singers will perform Feb. 20, followed the next night by the top 12 female contestants. The February “Idol” blitz continues with a Thursday show Feb. 22 at

8 p.m., when four contestants will be voted off the show by viewers.

Last year, Virginia’s banner was carried into the finals by Elliott Yamin of Richmond, who was working in a pharmacy when he decided to audition.

“I was doing a whole lot of nothing,” he said of his life before “American Idol.” Then lightning struck.
