Five months after “American Idol,” Elliott Yamin is still a star. At least, he was at the State Fair of Virginia.
A couple of hours before showtime yesterday, about 85 fans crowded the concourse near the Classic Amphitheatre and waited for their few seconds of a meet-and-greet with Yamin. Some flashed E-Train T-shirts, others, such as Richmonder MaryAnne Woo, were just happy to be in the vicinity of their idol.
“He’s different. He doesn’t seem to be in it just for the money,” said Woo, who couldn’t get tickets to the “American Idols Live” show in July at the Richmond Coliseum. She was determined to see Yamin this time.
Backstage, Yamin’s mom, Claudette, herself a media star, said she was nervous and excited for her son. “I just want him to do a great job,” she said, clad in jeans, a red sweater and wearing a blooming corsage from a fan.
During the concert, Yamin-mania erupted the moment the third-place “American Idol” finisher casually sauntered onstage to the percussive backbeat of Bill Withers’ “Use Me.”
One fan held up a sign deeming him “1 Funky White Boy,” a sentiment seemingly echoed by many in the crowd.
But at least one fervent follower admitted another reason for following Yamin’s career. Lisa McNeil of Glen Allen said she isn’t worried that Yamin hasn’t yet scored a record deal.
“Hopefully someone will grab him,” she said, and then added with a smile, “I will!”
