By winning first place and the title of the “Voice of Chattanooga,” a singing competition sponsored by WDSI-TV Fox 61 and the Chattanooga Coca Cola Bottling Company, UTC junior Jason Roberts, of McMinnville, is guaranteed an audition before the producers of American Idol 6, as well as two nights accommodations and spending cash in Birmingham. Auditions will take place Monday, Aug. 21.

Mr. Roberts stood before a panel of ten judges Friday night in the UTC University Center auditorium and was given two turns to impress them with his vocal talent. After amazing the judges and wowing the crowd with his second song “Shout!” Mr. Roberts and fellow finalist Keisia King were asked to step forward from the group of 11 vocal finalists to perform in a sing off. The two were tied for first place when judges asked them to prepare a song for a final shot to win.

After a coin toss and dropping one judge to ensure an odd number of votes, Mr. Roberts sang “More than Anyone,” by Gavin DeGraw, a song that had proven a victorious choice all the way through the competition. Ms. King sang “At Last,” by Etta James. But in the end, Mr. Roberts was crowned the winner of the competition.

“I feel phenomenal. I didn’t think I would make it this far. It’s amazing,” Mr. Roberts commented on his feeling after taking home his title.

Mr. Roberts’ mother said, “He lives for the stage. He loves to perform, I’m glad that he made it this far.”

Mr. Roberts said he appreciated all of the support, and he wouldn’t have made it this far without them. “My second song, ‘Shout,’ was all about crowd participation, if it hadn’t been for my family and friends it wouldn’t have worked.”
