American Idol Auditions coming to Birmingham Alabama
Birmingham has supplied so many “American Idol” finalists that some people joked the popular TV show might as well have its finals there.

For many, the announcement that auditions will be held there Aug. 21 is good enough.

Montgomerian Marissa George rehearsed for the show last year but ultimately decided not to try out when she learned the nearest audition site was in North Carolina.

“I definitely wish there had been a Birmingham audition last year,” the 25-year-old said. “I would have definitely gone.”

But Krista Collins, a 27-year-old Montgomerian who plans to tryout in Birmingham this year, said having auditions so close could be a mixed blessing.

“It’s good because it’s a short trip, but bad because it’ll probably be the most talent-filled audition of the bunch,” she said.

When Taylor Hicks won the competition this year, it gave Birmingham two winners and two second-place finishers in the past five seasons. Now the city itself will benefit from the auditions, which are expected to attract 10,000 to 15,000 entrants.

How much is that worth?

“You’re talking millions between hotels, rental of the facilities and then the intangibles of when you see your city, your facility highlighted like that on a No. 1 show,” said Scotty Colson, assistant to Mayor Bernard Kincaid. Birmingham is one of seven audition sites this year.

Birmingham’s Ruben Studdard won in 2002. Birmingham-born Diana DeGarmo was a second-place finisher in 2003, and Bo Bice finished second in 2005.
