American Idol’s” Katharine McPhee abruptly cancelled all of her upcoming press appearances last week, one day after revealing she has been struggling with an eating disorder for the past five years.

The 22-year-old runner-up told People magazine she decided to undergo treatment for bulimia after her successful “Idol” audition.
 
“When I made it onto “American Idol,” I knew that food, my eating disorder, was the one thing really holding me back,” McPhee told People. “I was bingeing my whole life away for days at a time. So when I got on the show, I said, ‘You know what? I can do well in this competition. Let me give myself a chance and just get a hold of this thing.’”
 
With the support of her parents and 41-year-old boyfriend, Nick Cokas, McPhee received treatment at the Eating Disorder Center of California last year, where she spent six days a week for three months undergoing group and individual therapy.

Although McPhee says she is still learning how to handle stress, she’s in a much better place now.

“I’ve learned to deal with my emotions differently,” she told People, “to deal with them, instead of with food.”
 
McPhee didn’t give a reason for canceling her interviews this week, but is still scheduled to tour alongside fellow “Idol” contestants this summer. Her first single, Somewhere Over the Rainbow / My Destiny will be released Tuesday, June 27.
