American Idol causes man to commit assault on a women, is the claim of a disturbed individual who is now in jail. An Argument stated over a discussion of Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks that lead to violence. Here is the rest of the story:
The mother of a Plattsburgh man who is accused of hitting her in the head with a bottle opener during a discussion about “American Idol†is upset with the media coverage the case is receiving.
“They are making it out to be a circus,†said Jan Chagnon, whose 24-year-old son, Cory K. Favreau, was charged May 24 with striking her on the head when she told him that “American Idol†contestant Katharine McPhee would receive a record contract despite losing to winner Taylor Hicks.
Favreau, of 200A Margaret St., was charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and sent to Clinton County Jail for lack of $5,000 cash bail.
Chagnon suffered a cut on the top of her head. She called 911 and was taken by ambulance to CVPH Medical Center, where she was treated and released.
Favreau was in Plattsburgh City Court for a hearing Monday morning and was released on his own recognizance.
The Press-Republican reported the arrest last Thursday, and the nationally known Web site the Drudge Report picked up the story and posted a link to the Press-Republican Web site. That day, that article was viewed more than 110,000 times. The Press-Republican Web site typically experiences about 50,000 page views each day.
The story surfaced elsewhere at a national level: Fox News, CNN and MSNBC Countdown featured the story last week, and ESPN Radio also gave it a mention.
Chagnon said Fox News contacted her recently for an interview.
“I think (the story’s notoriety) is because it has to do with ‘American Idol,’†she told the Press-Republican last Thursday. “It’s not like he repeatedly hit me over the head. (The media) make it out like he stood there and beat me with a chain with a hook on it. … I had to get only one stitch.â€
She claims Favreau was attempting to rumple up her hair when he mistakenly cut her head open with a bottle opener, which was a free gift with purchase of two packs of Camel cigarettes.
The bottle opener consists of a bike chain attached to a cross-shaped, sharpened medallion bearing the West Coast Choppers insignia.
“He always goes by and messes my hair up, just to get on my nerves,†Chagnon said.
She claims that because her son was under the influence of drugs and alcohol, he forgot he was holding onto the object at the time.
“He was having a relapse from his drug addiction,†she continued, explaining that Favreau in the past has been treated for addiction to painkillers.
Chagnon said Favreau had taken “a bunch of hydrocodones throughout the day†and one pill of Klonopin, a medication used to treat panic disorders. She said he was also drinking 160-proof vodka while they watched the “American Idol†finale.
Chagnon, who by the time of the alleged assault had consumed five beers herself, told Plattsburgh City Police officers the night of Favreau’s arrest that she did not want to press charges, claiming he had no intention of hurting her.
She said her son is a caring person who “would never even hurt an insect.â€
But she also said that when police tried to arrest Favreau he “wrestled with them a little bit.
“He needs help,†she said. “And I don’t want him to be made out a monster.â€
At Favreau’s City Court appearance Monday, Judge Penelope Clute said that Favreau was obviously under the influence of drugs and alcohol when she arraigned him May 25.
She told him Monday: “It’s a lot better when you’re not intoxicated.â€
“Two-hundred percent,†he responded.
Favreau was not eligible for a pre-trial release because of a previous violent felony conviction. He was convicted Oct. 28, 2003, in Clinton County Court of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon for having a knife in July 2003.
But his attorney, Allan Cruikshank, asked that Favreau be released so he could save his job at a local restaurant, which, Cruikshank said, was “hanging by a thread.â€
“Hopefully, this job is still there for you,†Clute said.
She allowed Favreau to be released, stipulating that he not use alcohol, undergo a alcohol-and-substance-abuse evaluation and that he have no contact with his mother.
Favreau signed a stay-away order of protection Monday, agreeing to live with his grandmother in Beekmantown.
A felony hearing regarding the case is scheduled for June 13.
