5-23-06 American Idol is down to the final two. Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks performing tonight for the final vote. Millions of fans get their chance to vote for their final idol and vote off one of the American Idols. Who will be the American Idol winner?
Some celebrities have given their endorsements and predictions. Here is what they had to say:
Mario (R&B singer): “I think Katharine will win despite Taylor’s great talent. She has a big voice and sings with great passion.”
Raj Bhakta (former “Apprentice” lothario turned Pa. congressional candidate): “Taylor and Katharine are obviously both talented, but as I am a man, I am rooting for Katharine to win it all.”
Donny Deutsch (host of “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch”): “Katharine McPhee has got what it takes to follow in Kelly Clarkson’s footsteps, but my pick is Taylor Hicks. His sound and look is unique and in this cookie-cutter world, that will make him stand apart from everyone else.”
Cindy Margolis (Internet pin-up): “I feel that Katharine will win tonight because she picked up most of Elliott’s following.”
Marianela (Fuse TV veejay): “When it comes to tonight’s winner … I gots me the McPhee-ver! Katharine McPheever is the clear-cut winner when it comes to having the entire package.”
Raqiyah Mays (on-air personality for HOT 97): “Taylor Hicks is going to win it. He sounds like Michael McDonald and he’s been a fan favorite every show, and never been in the bottom two. And he’s one of the few who can sing almost anything and sound good. Katharine McPhee is a hit or miss. If she picks the wrong song, America is going to send her packing.”
Pat Kiernan (NY1 anchorman): “Taylor feels the music. I like that, and the win will be a bigger deal to his career. Yes, Katharine looks great – but even if she’s the runner-up, you can still count on the fact that we’ll get to see her in person when she comes to Broadway. Every musical needs the occasional dose of B-list celebrity in the cast to attract the tourists. She’ll fill that role nicely even if she’s a runner-up.”
Carlos Mencia (host of Comedy Central’s “The Mind of Mencia”): “I don’t care who wins as long as Paula stops crying. I swear to God I feel like I’m watching Spanish television.”
Howard Stern: “I think Katharine McPhee is great, [she needed to lose some weight] and I think she seems to have taken this dropping 15 pounds thing pretty seriously.”
Nancy O’Dell (co-anchor, “Access Hollywood”): “I predict Taylor Hicks… I liked him from the very beginning. He is so different, quirky, lovable and his voice is outstanding and unique. My husband and I anxiously await his performances on ‘Idol’ and that big ol’ smile makes me wanna squeeze his cheeks.”
Kathie Lee Gifford: “It’s the battle of the sexes, but I think in the end Taylor will be the victor. He makes people smile. That’s something we all need to do more of.”
Erin Moriarty (CBS “48 Hours Mystery” correspondent): “I pick Katharine McPhee because everyone has been criticizing her on everything from her singing to her clothes. I like her and I go with the underdog.”
Geraldo Rivera (host, “Geraldo at Large”): “Kat’s larger-than-life with a star presence. The guy’s good, but a Vegas lounge act.”
Lil Jon (crunk superstar): “Da chick gonna win! She can reallllllly sing and last two winners have been girls.”
Tyra Banks (host, “The Tyra Banks Show” and “America’s Next Top Model”): “I love how Taylor got so crazy with ‘Try a Little Tenderness!’ He is hot. But Katharine is just so beautiful and engaging – she’s a star! So who knows?”
Michelle Phillips: “I can’t watch. It breaks my heart to see someone lose.”
Maria Milito (Q104 DJ): “Well, it seems that Taylor Hicks will be it, but you never know when it comes to Americans and their voting!”
Mark Steines (co-anchor, “Entertainment Tonight”): “I’m personally rooting for Katharine to win, and I told her so. But Taylor will probably win – he is already much more branded.”
Marla Maples: “I think Katharine is so beautiful and so very talented, yet I love that Taylor – he just always makes me laugh and smile.”
Brittny Gastineau (star of “Gastineau Girls” on E!): “Taylor Hicks because ‘American Idol’ has never had a singer like him before. He’s from Alabama – ‘Roll Tide roll!’ I’m also a big fan of Jay Leno and he looks just like him.”
Lisa Gastineau (star of “Gastineau Girls” on E!): “Taylor Hicks because he’s soulful and will take the show to a new level of talent and musical credibility. He steers the show away from the bubblegum image it’s had in the past. Plus, Alabama produces winners, look at Reuben.”
Joseph Gannascoli (whacked Vito on “The Sopranos”): “Well, I was really pulling for Elliott (Yamin); he has overcome a lot in life to get where he is . . . as far as the winner, I like Taylor but gotta go with Katharine. She is ‘McHot.’”
Jonathan Cheban (president of Command PR)
“I’m rooting for Katharine. Taylor really belongs as the entertainment director on a cruise.”
D.L. Hughley (star of NBC’s upcoming “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”): “Taylor Hicks, because I’m a proud member of the ‘Soul Patrol.’”
Leslie Gold (”The Radiochick Show,” on 92.3Free FM): “I pick Taylor Hicks. I don’t think America can resist a guy who looks and moves like a dimwitted George Clooney.”
Lizzie Grubman (president of Grubman PR): “I like Taylor. He’s really talented, and I think a guy deserves to win.”
Simon Doonan (creative director of Barneys): “Katharine McPhee is beautiful and talented, but unremarkable. As a pop star, she would be indistinguishable from the current chart-topping chippies. Taylor Hicks is goofy and very musical and has enormous breadth of appeal. He is a total one-off and deserves to win – because he’s not trying to be Justin Timberlake or anyone else.”
Ashley Parker Angel (singer, reality star): “Taylor Hicks, because his voice is amazing and incredibly soulful. I like him because he’s different from any other ‘American Idol’ contestant.”
Justine Bateman (”Arrested Development”):
“Sorry, I don’t watch reality shows – I think they’re evil and there’s nothing real about them. Oh, was that too angry?”
Lyfe Jennings (R&B artist): “My pick is Taylor Hicks to win ‘Idol’ because the first time I saw him perform I was like, wow that boy can blow. He’s unique and talented with a magnetic spirit.”
Brooke Hogan (singer, Hulk’s daughter, whose first single “About Us,” hits in June): “Katharine McPhee – She has a beautiful voice and great stage presence. I love watching her perform.”
Richard Lewis, (”Curb Your Enthusiasm”):
“I wish them both the best – but tragically, I only idolize my psychotherapist and hope she wins as a write-in.”
