Albemarle was tickled pink early Saturday to welcome home American Idol contestant Kellie Pickler.
The singer may not have won the competition, but she certainly won hundreds of new fans in the Stanly County town that was decked out in her favorite hue. Despite her immense following, Pickler was voted off the television show last week.
The celebration started with a parade at 11 a.m., but people began parking at the shuttle lot at 8 a.m. just to be at the front of parade route when the roller-skating waitress turned performer came by.
 Â
Fans even had the chance to witness an emotional reunion between Pickler and her dad. She hadn’t seen him in three years; he was released from a Florida prison on Monday.
“It’s a God-sent blessing that she’s overcome what she has in her short life and all she’s accomplished, and I’m just extremely proud of what she’s done,†Clyde Pickler said.
Kellie Pickler said she’s surprised by the changes.
“I had no idea that I was going to make it this far in the competition, and it’s definitely done a 180 in my life,†she said.
Pickler attributes her success to her fans.
“Fortunately I have great fans that still picked Pickler and voted for me all night long and kept me there an extra week, and it was just my time to go. It is what it is,†she said. “I can’t complain about anything because that would be really ungrateful.â€
 Â
Fans also appreciated Pickler’s devotion to them at Saturday’s events. She was scheduled to sing the national anthem, but the performance was canceled because it would violate Pickler’s American Idol contract. But Pickler came out and sang “The Star-Spangled Banner†regardless of the repercussions she may face.
Rockingham also welcomed home its Idol contestant, Bucky Covington, on Saturday. Mayor Eugene McLaurin II declared it Bucky Covington Day and the town held a “Bucky Bash.â€
Covington could not sign autographs or sing because of his Idol contract, but he did try to meet as many fans as possible. His twin brother, Rocky Covington, took to the stage to sing for guests because Bucky could not.
Because both Covington and Pickler made it to the top 10 before being cut, they will perform in the American Idol concert tour that comes to Charlotte on August 1.
Chris Daughtry of McLeansville is the only remaining North Carolina contestant in the show, which is down to the final four singers.
