Bucky Covington and Kellie Pickler will get official welcomes from their respective hometowns today, but one thing will be missing — the songs that made them famous on “American Idol.”
Because of contracts they’ve signed with the show, they are prohibited from singing in public.
Albemarle thought it would be OK for Pickler to sing the National Anthem, but was told by the show this week it was a no-go.
“They don’t want anybody making videos of her singing,” said Judy Holcomb, an Albemarle City Council member and one of the organizers of today’s events.
Likewise, Bucky Covington won’t be exercising his pipes in a daylong celebration in Rockingham, though his twin brother, Rocky, will sing with the band Caddy Wampus.
Both cities showed their civic support for the singers with banners and signs. Albemarle is speckled with pink bows, and the city fountain is now running pink in Pickler’s honor. Rockingham is getting a fresh layer of pro-Covington signage for the ceremony, said Kim Williams, city event coordinator.
Thousands are expected at each event, though the threat of rain may dampen attendance.
Pickler, 19, and Covington, 28, made the cut to the final 10 on the Fox variety show before getting cut. They will both return to the stage for the “American Idol” concert tour, which launches July 6 in Manchester, N.H., and has a date in Charlotte on Aug. 1.
North Carolina still has one contestant in the final four of “American Idol,” Chris Daughtry, 26, of McLeansville. He will perform Elvis Presley songs on Tuesday’s episode.
