Wednesday night’s installment of American Idol saw the last of 17-year-old Paris Bennett, which gets the show down to its final four contestants.
The granddaughter of Sounds Of Blackness vocalist Ann Nesby didn’t cut it with her rendition of Prince’s “Kiss,” which was labeled as “screechy” and “annoying” by judge Simon Cowell on Tuesday. While Bennett’s performance of Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You” dazzled Cowell, judge Randy Jackson called it too “pitchy.”
This week ontestants were asked to sing a song found on any of Billboard’s current charts as well as a song from their birth year. Prince released “Kiss” in 1986, so perhaps Bennett was singing Art Of Noise’s 1988 version.
Once considered one of the competition’s strongest voices, Bennett left the show with the fewest votes of the 45 million cast. Struggling hopeful Elliot Yamin had the next lowest vote total.
The remaining contenders are Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks, Yamin and the only remaining female, Katharine McPhee. The four have been flown to Elvis Presley’s Graceland estate for private vocal training from Mariah Carey’s ex-husband, label executive Tommy Mottola, for next week’s Elvis-themed show.
Amidst the growing excitement for the May 25 final episode comes a prediction from Cowell on who will become this year’s winner.
“I think it will be between Chris [Daughtry] or Taylor [Hicks],” he told ABC News. “But you can’t rule out Katharine [McPhee], because she’s just getting better and better.”
As the competition heats up between the contestants, there’s also been reports of fireworks among the judges and host Ryan Seacrest. “You’ve got four colossal egos, with mine being the smallest in a very small space,” said Cowell, who called Seacrest the “most egotistical person I have ever met in my life.”
The top-rated television series in the U.S. will release its fifth compilation album on May 23. American Idol Season 5 Encores will feature performances by the 12 finalists, including Daughtry rocking Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead Or Alive,” Kellie Pickler covering Patsy Cline’s “Walkin’ After Midnight,” and Hicks’ rendition of the Doobie Brothers’ “Takin’ It To The Streets.”
The first four compilations in the series sold a combined 2.4 million copies, and the whole American Idol franchise (including contestant albums) has sold more than 19 million albums and 4.5 million singles.
