In its fifth season, the colossal success of Fox’s “American Idol” seems to know no limit. But who or what is the driving force behind the reality show’s unbeatable ratings? Quibbling co-stars of the contest, host Ryan Seacrest and co-judge Simon Cowell, each has his own theory.
 
    “The contestants have become politicians,” Seacrest offers to this week’s Entertainment Weekly. “They learned very quickly when to look surprised or sad or happy, how to work the audience. There is a real formula to winning American Idol, and they’re all trying to figure it out.” 
  
    But Cowell asserts that it’s not just the singers who are working the show’s system. The reality contest’s caustic judge pins part of this season’s popularity surge on the audience.
 
    “The audience is much more savvy than they ever were before, and I don’t think they’re judging the show this year like previous shows,” Cowell explains. “They’re listening very, very carefully - and rewarding and punishing accordingly each week.”
 
    As avid watchers of the hit series know, Cowell and Seacrest disagree on much more than who is responsible for the show’s success.
 
    Cowell speaks out about their clash in opinion concerning constructive criticism.
 
    “I always say to Ryan when he’s having a go at me for saying something critical, ‘The day you take three of these losing contestants under your wing, manage them for a year and play their records, I’ll shake your hand,’ ” Cowell says. But Cowell doubts that will happen, adding that Seacrest would turn down a loser’s request to give a new album air time.
