Depending on what part of the country you live in, American Idol reviews and American Idol North Carolina Connectionpredictions are a different as the weather.  Here is a Review from the Backwoods, where Kellie Pickler, Bucky Covington and Chris Daughtry call home: North Carolina

—-
While first season “Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson took home the Grammy a couple months ago, last season’s winner and reigning “Idol” Carrie Underwood took home one of county music’s biggest prizes Monday evening. Underwood claimed two Country Music Television awards, making this Idol competition even more valid for these contestants. Knowing their predecessors are earning the respect of the music industry makes this “American Idol” competition all that more important. Tuesday night, the eight still in contention tackled the classic songs of the rock band Queen. While I thought my ears might be bleeding by the end of the show, I was pleasantly surprised by the performances and it’s the most entertained I’ve been since the Barry Manilow show three weeks ago. Here’s what the judges and I thought:

 Bucky Covington, 28, Rockingham, NC:Bucky Covington 4-11-06
Song: “Fat Bottomed Girls”

Randy: Cool way to start the show. I liked it.

Paula: You made “Fat Bottomed Girls” a country/rock song – it was great.

Simon: Good song choice, but the song was bigger than you and I found it quite mediocre.

Me: This was my favorite Bucky performance yet. He had the audience into it, he looked comfortable, and he was engaging and entertaining.

Score: 8 out of 10

Ace Young, 25, Denver, CO.:
Song: “We Will Rock You”

Randy: That was a big song. It was only like a 5 or 6 for me. It was a little karaoke for me, dood.

Paula: I like what you tried to do and that you took a risk.

Simon: A complete and utter mess. It didn’t work – it was like, “We Will Rock You, Gently.”

Me: I was surprised by the judge’s comments, as I actually liked how Ace tried to change up a classic song and put his own twist on it. It wasn’t the greatest vocal in the world, but I found him entertaining.

Score: 7

Kellie Pickler, 19, Albemarle, NC:Kellie Pickler 4-11-06
Song: “Bohemian Rhapsody”

Randy: I was entertained – you worked it out.

Paula: It was truly ambitious. You started off a little hesitant, but then you became this rocker girl.

Simon: You are a brave girl. On paper that should have been hideous, but I think it actually worked.

Me: That was weird. I knew Kellie was going to attempt Bo Rhap and I fully anticipated having to push the mute button, but this girl can sing and she entertainingly pull off a classic song that was completely out of her genre. Props to Kellie.

Score: 9

Chris Daughtry, 26, McLeansville, NC:Chris Daughtry 4-11-06
Song: “Innuendo”

Randy: I expected bit things from you tonight and you delivered!

Paula: The band was in total admiration of your performance - it was awesome.

Simon: The best vocal tonight. Although, it’s a shame you didn’t decide to entertain the audience with a more well-known Queen song, you could have really have “a moment” tonight, but instead I think you were a little indulgent, again.

Me: I disagree with Simon - and Paula, for that matter. First Paula – the Grand Canyon is “awesome” this is merely “American Idol.” As for Simon, I think Chris did himself a favor not going with a well-known Queen song. He had his moment – a few of them actually as he hit some remarkably hard notes and had the audience in the palm of his hands.

Score: 9 1/2

Katharine McPhee, 21, Los Angeles, CA:Katharine McPhee 4-11-06
Song: “Who Wants to Live Forever”

Randy: You did a good job overall.

Paula: You stood there and you were glorious with your glorious voice. This is a song Streisand or Dion would take on and you, Katharine McPhee, can handle it.

Simon: Almost “a moment” for you. Overall, one of the strongest tonight.

Me: Katharine had a few pitch problems which are unusual for her – it was only those that kept her from having her “moment.” She has one of the top voices in this competition and she chose a song this week which finally showed that off a bit more.

Score: 9

Elliot Yamin, 27, Richmond, VA.:
Song: “Somebody to Love”

Randy: Arguably the hardest song to sing tonight and dood, I loved you. It was really, really good.

Paula: Best vocal tonight – fantastic.

Simon: You chose a tough one and I think you pulled it off.

Me: What Elliot was doing in the bottom three last week is beyond me. This is a singing competition, right? That song is vocally very, very challenging, and except for a few pitch problems, which I think were the result of Elliot trying to sing over a very loud band, his performance was outstanding.

Score: 9 1/2

Taylor Hicks, 29, Birmingham, AL:
Song: “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”

Randy: The last two weeks it’s been like ‘where’s Taylor?’ Tonight – Taylor’s back and he’s kickin’. That was hawt.

Paula: That was authentic Taylor.

Simon: Taylor, are you drunk? I thought it was ridiculous.

Me: That was fun, fun, fun. Taylor is very entertaining and while that wasn’t the most vocally challenging song in Queen’s catalogue, Taylor sang it very well. I think Simon is just a jealous hater.

Score: 8 1/2

Paris Bennett, 17, Fayetteville, GA:
Song: “The Show Must Go On”

Randy: I knew it was gonna be tough for you. It was rough in the beginning and the middle, but you worked it out in the end.

Paula: You’re a powerhouse – keep on rockin’.

Simon: I found it all a little weird.

Me: Minus the cool British accent, I found it a bit weird myself. A hip-hop inflection of a classic Queen rock song? And a 17-year-old girl in a hussy leather outfit sporting a wig? Yes, it was all quite weird.

Score: 5

High point of the night: Elliot – his voice was fabulous on a tough, tough song.

Low point of the night, otherwise known as “toodles”: Pack your leathers, Paris.
