a big name fell out of “American Idol’s” lineup. Mandisa has been a power-house over the early weeks of the show, but has been slipping during the past two weeks. And country music just wasn’t her thang.
It wasn’t Elliott Yamin’s or Paris Bennett’s thang either. All three are top-notch R&B singers, but the country tilt really brought out the weakness — not just in them, but in most of the contestants.
When Elliott and Mandisa were on stage and Ryan Seacrest called out Mandisa’s name as the person being booted from the show, there was a moment when nobody seemed to know what to do. Be excited for Elliott? Or be sad for Mandisa? Taylor Hicks was about to clap and stopped before his hands could connect. Even Elliott’s family seemed puzzled.
Then, as everyone realized what had happened — that one of the loved personalities was gone, they began slowly standing and clapping instead for Mandisa.
It no doubt is going to get more and more difficult now and more and more unpredictable.
I have to admit, in many ways I had hoped Mandisa would catch fire again and maybe be this year’s Ruben Studdard — and I mean that in the most respectful way. Ruben, by the way, has gone gospel and you can hear his new stuff on his Web site.
I’m guessing Mandisa will have no problem doing the same if she so chooses.
Did American make the right choice?
