American Idol Short Recap 4-5-06Â
Ryan Seacrest announces that just under 35 million votes were cast for the
American Idol Top 9. Kenny Rogers returns to performs “I Can’t Unlove You.â€Â For their Ford commercial, the American Idol finalists sing “Just One Look†while pretending to build a car by flipping a switch. Seacrest busts on Kellie Pickler saying “I have a feeling that Kellie thinks that’s how cars are really made.â€Â
Seacrest splits the Idols into three groups of three. In the first group is Taylor Hicks, Kellie Pickler, and Chris Daugthry. In the second group is Mandisa Hundley, Elliott Yamin, and Paris Bennett. In the third group is Ace Young, Katharine McPhee, and Bucky Covington. Seacrest tells Taylor, Kellie, and Chris that they are safe. Seacrest also tells Bucky, Katharine, and Ace that they are safe.
The bottom three are Mandisa, Elliott, and Paris. Of the three, the biggest shocker is Paris Bennett, whose performance Simon Cowell had actually liked. Elliott Yamin also got positive reviews from Randy and Paula, but he has been fighting an uphill battle to build a fanbase against other contestants who have received more screen time. Mandisa has been a very popular contestant, but she clearly had an off-night during the Country theme performances. Â
Seacrest sends Paris back to the seats of safety. Simon predicts that Elliott will stay. Seacrest announces that Mandisa is going home. Mandisa says “I want to thank my fans so much. Your support has meant the world for me, and the prayers that have been lifted up for me I know will continue to have full force for me, so I thank you and I bless you in the name of Jesus.â€Â

It seems to me that American Idol would be a lot more fair, with eliminations based more on merit, if people voted to eliminate contestants rather than to keep them in. That would, I think, prevent the sort of surprise elimination that happened with Mandisa, which I can only assume happened because her supporters had no reason to suspect she was in any danger whatever of being eliminated. (She was my choice for the top three, and I was betting on her to win the thing.) Likewise, Kevin Covais would never have stayed in the game long past his time. I think that callers voting against someone would likely concentrate on the few contestants who are clearly less talented than the others. And it wouldn’t be necessary for people looking to keep all the talented performers in the show to vote for each of them each week.
(Hmmm. Writing this it occurs to me that less-than-fair-minded fans could organize a campaign to eliminate more talented contestants that stand in the way of their own favorite…. Sigh.)

Yeah, I like the “Survior” style of voting as well.

American Idol is awful. A bunch of no talent hacks caterwauling should not hold the interest of so many people!
