‘American Idol’ Watch
WHO: Chris Daughtry, 26, of McLeansville NC
WHAT: “American Idol,†season five
WHERE: 8 p.m. Tuesday, all, now 10, contestants perform; 9 p.m. Wednesday, results of the nationwide vote revealed sending one contestant home — on FoxÂ
WHAT DID HE SING? Each week the group is given an artist or genre from which to choose a song. This week, they were flown to Las Vegas to meet and rehearse songs from the 1950s with Barry Manilow. “Chris knocked me out,†the legendary crooner said after Daughtry sang Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line.†He rearranged the tune to fit his rock personality.
WHAT DID THE JUDGES SAY?
Randy Jackson: “Let me say this, I don’t know if it’s the best vocals you’ve done since you’ve been on the show, but what I loved about this is you took a song that everyone knows and you put a different spin on it. You made it an alternative record that fit exactly who you are.â€
Paula Abdul: “There are a few of you American Idols on stage that I wait for every week. I can’t wait to hear what you’re going to sing and what you’re going to do. You are so true to who you are and you don’t ever abandon that. … It’s like you should be already touring and we should be already buying tickets.â€
Simon Cowell: “I agree with Randy. I don’t think it’s the best vocals we’ve heard from you so far, but I don’t think it matters. … I think you are the first artist we’ve ever had on this show who actually refused to compromise, and for that, a round of applause.â€
HOW DID HE RESPOND: “It felt good. It felt really good,†Daughtry said after host Ryan Seacrest asked about his performance. “I got a couple of lines turned around but that’s all good.†When Seacrest pointed out the number of women screaming Daughtry’s name, he blushed and looked down, speechless.
SHOW RESULTS: Votes totaled 35 million. Kevin Covais, of Levittown, N.Y., received the fewest votes and left the show. Bucky Covington, of Rockingham in Richmond County, received the second fewest votes but remains in the running. Another North Carolinian in the competition— Kellie Pickler, of Albemarle — also remains.
GRAND PRIZE: A $1 million recording contract
