Former contestants weigh in on ‘American Idol’

Crystal Stark, 23, and Yvette Gonzalez, 28, are former “American Idol” contestants who closely follow the show.
For the rest of the season, they’ll share their thoughts, critiques and quips on who deserves the spotlight and who needs to go home. (”Idol” airs on  Tuesdays and Wednesdays.)

Their thoughts from this week’s shows:
 
Was the Stevie Wonder theme night a good idea?
CS: I feel like it can only get easier from here. Maybe they did it like that to totally immerse everybody right away.
YG: You have to be able to sing a lot of stuff and have a broad range. I think it’s good they started with that.
Who took charge of the stage?
CS: It was between Taylor (Hicks) and Paris (Bennett) performance-wise overall. They owned the stage.
YG: I have to go with Chris Daughtry. He was spectacular. I think it was perfect. He’s totally unstoppable.
Who was last night’s big surprise?
CS: I thought that Bucky looked good. I was waiting for that. I’d say he went from like a three to a seven.
YG: Taylor Hicks. I totally was not a fan. I was getting tired of the little Joe Cocker. Last night was his best overall performance.
How many more times do you think Elliot Yamin will cry before the end of the season?
CS: Stevie is his big idol, so anything after this he should be able to keep it together. If he wins, then I’d say he’ll at least cry one more time.
YG: I think he’s going to cry every time they meet somebody famous, basically.
Did you love that Kevin Covais chose “Part-Time Lover?”
CS: I was like, it’s a little mature song for you there, buddy. Maybe he’s trying out his new role as a sex symbol.
YG: I think he’s probably the only one who had fun.
Does it even matter when Ace Young completely bombs?
CS: I think that was proved with Becky O’Donohue. My brother was drooling over her. But she opened her mouth, and America voted her off.
YG: I think he’ll sail through because of his looks. It’s that little smile.
Did America make the right call (Melissa McGhee was eliminated)?
CS: I was completely surprised by Ace and Lisa (Tucker) being in the bottom three. I thought it was going to be Kevin, Melissa (McGhee) and Bucky (Covington).
YG: They all looked scared tonight. I just knew it was going to be either Kevin or Melissa.
