American Idol: In Search of “Higher Ground”
Last night was Stevie Wonder night on American Idol, the first of many “theme” nights to come. As is usual, it was a mixed bag. The evening kicked off with lackluster performances until Mandisa burned up the stage once again with a performance of “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing”. Unfortunately, we also got to see Melissa McGhee forget the words to her song “Lately.” I thought we left those problems behind in Hollywood.
This was also the first night with the contestants having access to stylists to hone their on-air appearance. Carrie Un, I mean Kellie Pickler, got the expected wavy do…but so did Bucky! Simon said Bucky’s Jessica Simpson look had to go. Unfortunately, those in charge of the clothes seemed to stear clear of Kevin Covais who still looks like he’s dressed from the quarter rack at the local thrift store.
As the 2 hour show wore on it appeared that some of the best performances were saved for the latter part of the show. Katharine McPhee lit up the audience with “Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)”, originally a hit Stevie Wonder gave to Aretha Franklin, and Taylor Hicks, the dancing spasms a bit calmed down, turned in an inimitably soulful rendition of “Living for the City.” However, the show wasn’t over yet. As the final performer, Chris Daughtry brought the house down with his Red Hot Chili Peppers-Stevie Wonder hybrid version of “Higher Ground”. It was one of the best performances of the season so far, rivaling Mandisa’s “I’m Every Woman.”
