Though he didn’t make it past the Hollywood auditions, Tim Chiles didn’t walk away from American Idolhis “American Idol” experience empty handed. Some of the things he gained through the audition process were new friends, a little publicity and trips to Chicago and Hollywood.

The friends he made include the Brittenham twins and Mandisa – names that may sound
familiar if you are a regular viewer of the hit reality show, which is making its way closer to the final 10 contestants. But more importantly, Chiles also came back with a winning attitude.
Chiles, 28, of Joplin, has been singing and dancing since the age of 3. Growing up, he was active in show choirs, cotillions, Joplin Little Theater and the Pinocchio School of Dance. Chiles says he has watched “Idol” since its first season in 2002 and knew that he would somehow get on the show.

At the time, however, the age limit was 22 years old and he was 23. The age limit was raised in the third season, when Fantasia Barrino won, but family obligations did not allow him to audition that year, and work obligations kept him from auditioning for season four. It started to seem like maybe being an “Idol” wasn’t in his future. But that changed when he was able to audition last August following a contest sponsored by Fox 14. After sailing through the local competition, Chiles was on his way to Chicago.

The September audition was the show’s largest audition site, with 12,000-15,000 hopefuls singing their lungs out to be one of the few who made it through to the next level of the audition process in Hollywood.People lined up for blocks, camping out in the
weather for their turn to impress the judges. Being an affiliate winner, Chiles got to bypass those long lines and begin the audition screenings.
When he made it to his final audition, he said he took a deep breath, tried to think about remaining calm, and reminded himself how grateful he was to be in that spot at that moment in time. Some last minute thoughts ran through his mind: “Perfect pitch, sing to them, make (the judges) feel the song,” he said.

After he performed, he waited for judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul toAmerican Idol Judges make their decisions and remarks. Simon was impressed, Paula was undecided, and Randy “just wasn’t feelin’ it,” Chiles said. He pleaded his case to the judges to let him through and after some deliberation – and a persistent Simon Cowell, who believed in him – he got his golden ticket tobe among the contestants in Hollywood.

The Hollywood audition, held in December, was much more competitive, and the judges had to unanimously decide to advance hopefuls. Since the judges were in a split decision with Chiles, he was sent home in the third round of the semifinals. “I was happy just to be there,” he said of the experience. “I did my best, but know I can do better. That’s how you grow in life, by trying to be better all the time.” Chiles also says that “courage is an acquired taste.”
“The more you put yourself out there and be courageous, the better your chances are of success,” he said. Chiles said he hopes to try out one more time for “Idol.” He thinks that if Taylor Hicks, an older, well-liked finalist, does well on the show that the creators will raise the age limit again. He has surpassed the current age limit, but said he’s crossing his fingers that the show’s producers will up the age limit one more time.
