‘Idol’: The Men Give It Their All!
On Tuesday night, the eight “American Idol” women finalists — AYLA BROWN, PARIS BENNETT, LISA TUCKER, MANDISA, KATHARINE McPHEE, MELISSA McGHEE, KELLIE PICKLER and KINNIK SKY — performed. But for two, it will be their swan song, as only six will go on.
If SIMON COWELL has his say, the two to go will be Kinnik and Melissa, both of whom he told, “I think you have just booked your plane ticket home.” Of course, America has the final say, so it won’t be until Thursday night that the Final 12 will be announced after the votes are tallied.
It was Mandisa who got top kudos for her performance of CHAKA KHAN’s “I’m Every Woman.” RANDY JACKSON said, “This to me is the best vocal by a female this season. She just sent the benchmark, girls.” And Simon added, “This is the only performance I would rewind on my TiVo.”
Tonight the guys compete. Of the original 12, only eight remain: ACE YOUNG, BUCKY COVINGTON, CHRIS DAUGHTRY, ELLIOTT YAMIN, GEDEON McKINNEY, KEVIN COVAIS, TAYLOR HICKS and WILL MAKAR. So who will measure up?
Gedeon kicked off the night with “When a Man Loves a Woman.” Randy thought it was just all right. “You are an old soul,” he commented. “I like the fact that you know that and continue with who you are.” Simon agreed, saying, “You are quite odd aren’t you? I thought it was good, but a bit cabaret and a bit over the top. You are interesting. You are growing on me.”
Rocker Chris Daughtry showed a softer side with a SYSTEM OF A DOWN tune. Randy told him he loves people who know who they are and know their voices. Paula prophesized: “Whatever happens, you will be out there selling out stadiums.” Simon, however, was a bit more jaded and cautioned, “You have a long way to go. Don’t get too insular.”
Kevin sang DON McLEAN’s “Vincent.” Randy thought it was an interesting, but weird song choice. “You can really sing,” he said. “It was a nice performance. You are in the dawg pound.” Paula added, “I have nothing but love for you. Ballads are your ticket.” But the Brit wit wasn’t as pleased. He said he could understand why people like Kevin, but his performance was very juvenile.
Bucky went country rock, which Randy appreciated. Paula told him, “You are unpretentious. You are raw.” Simon felt it was just okay and okay isn’t good enough.
Will Makar channeled JAMES TAYLOR for “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You).” Randy and Paula both thought it was a great song, but Simon said Will’s performance was “completely average.”
Taylor Hicks sang MICHAEL McDONALD’s “Takin’ It To the Streets,” which brought Paula to her feet and prompted Simon to say it was “the best performance so far.”
Elliott Yamin’s version of “Heaven” by BRYAN ADAMS was well-received. “That was hot,” said Randy.
A MICHAEL JACKSON tune closed the night with Ace Young’s falsetto performance of “Butterflies.” A risky move, but Randy also pronounced his version “hot.”
