No `Idol,’ but song goes on
David Radford sees music in his future

Music is still in David Radford’s future.

Radford, a Crystal Lake high school senior, was eliminated from “American Idol” on Thursday night, but in a Friday conference call with reporters, said he’s still committed to a career as a singer.

“This is by no means the end of the road, it’s more of a beginning than anything,” Radford said of his “Idol” experience, which he called “Showbiz 101.”

“I have learned things here that you can’t learn anywhere else,” he noted. “What my vocal coaches and the judges said to me, I will take with me for the rest of my life.”

Still, “it’s a very nerve racking time,” Radford said of performing on the show. Those nerves may have accounted for his somewhat shaky version of “The Way You Look Tonight,” which got negative comments from all three “Idol” judges. Simon Cowell told Radford he didn’t look “confident.”

“I didn’t really disagree with the judges when I saw” a tape of the performance, Radford said.

He said his advice to future “Idol” contestants was “be true to yourself and stick with what you do best.”

Looking ahead, Radford is pondering his college options. He hasn’t yet heard if he got into music program at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, but he said he should know in a couple of weeks.

Radford has one other goal before he graduates: to “get a prom date.” He should have no problem with that.
