Franklin Bridge Voted off Next Great American Band
On the third Next Great American Band results show, one band was eliminated and the top seven bands performed a Leiber and Stoller song in front of the judges. Light of Doom performed the Leiber and Stoller song “Jailhouse Rock.” John Rzeznik said “I’m speechless. What can I say?” Shelia E. said “Rockfabolous, that’s what it is.” Dicko said “You’re becoming more and more watchable every single week.”
The Clark Brothers performed the Leiber and Stoller song “Saved.” John Rzeznik said “It was really great, and you always bring it.” Shelia E. said “This is why you guys are still here, because of that.” Dicko said “Even a wretch like me feels closer to salvation after that.”
Dot Dot Dot performed the Leiber and Stoller song “Love Potion #9.” John Rzeznik said “You’re great with a guitar in your hands, keep your hands busy.” Shelia E. said “That was fantastic, it was exciting, and it was great.” Dicko said “I really, really think you’ve turned the corner.”
Cliff Wagner And The Old No. 7 performed the Leiber and Stoller song “Poison Ivy.” John Rzeznik said “All I wish is that you would have pushed it just a little harder.” Shelia E. said “It was superb.” Dicko said “It just felt a little lazy, and I know you’re better than that.”
Denver And The Mile High Orchestra performed the Leiber and Stoller song “Ruby Baby.” John Rzeznik said “I think you guys funk skills are really, really limited.” Shelia E. said “It was marvelous.” Dicko said “You’re building a brand right now. You should consolidate your core proposition.”
Sixwire performed the Leiber and Stoller song “I Keep Forgettin.’” John Rzeznik said “That was technically a really nice performance, but It just felt like you were going through the motions to me.” Shelia E. said “I wasn’t sure about the song for you guys.” Dicko said “It’s like a lukewarm bath, and we need more of an edge.”
Tres Bien performed the Leiber, Stoller, and Barrett song “Some Other Guy.” John Rzeznik said “You guys did great with that song.” Shelia E. said “You guys are a lot of fun, and it shows.” Dicko said “Perfect song from perfect era for you to peddle your retro rock.”
In a results shocker, Franklin Bridge was eliminated from the competition. Franklin Bridge had been an early favorite after an incredible take on “Tangled Up In Blue.” When host Dominic Bowden pointed out that Shelia E. had predicted that Franklin Bridge could go all the way, Shelia E. said “I did. I think, not to get anyone mad, but I think they made a mistake. I think Franklin Bridge should be on this stage right now. I don’t understand. I’m sorry guys. I’m really, really sorry. I think America got it wrong this time.”

I’ve been reading these comments with some mixed feelings about what people have to say. From the assumed racists opinions of Franklin Bridge being dumped because it’s an white man’s thing to everything in between. There are just some very narrow minded, musicaly uneducated people who don’t really know how it works. It’s not rigged, preselected or racially biased. People keep forgetting who’s doing the voting. The listeners. Don’t you think that other blacks listen? Or Metal Heads, or new wave? In my opinion, the Three Beans and DOT DOT DOT should have been the first to go. Franklin Bridge was, yes, better. Yes, Franklin Bridge was very good, but, as the judges say, “Can you cut an album people will buy?” The judges reminded them several times about the over arranging, poor vocals and lack of communicatons between band members. And the pot thing at the end, no class, no class at all. Priorities.
As for “Light of Doom”, you have got to give these kids credit. Taken their age for one thing, then the amount of talent at that age. They have no where else to go but up. At their age they have alot of time to hone and perfect their talents. And, being a musician myself, anyone who has played any kind of rock or for that matter any form of music knows that it all revolves around three chords in the beginning. That’s what you learn first.
The other main factor is, the versatility of the music they are required to play. Denver & the Mile High Band are a big band, swing era type music. I think they are very versitile. As for DOT DOT DOT, how many times were they told about the vocals? The front man as much said, he was so good he didn’t need advice. He’s an idiot. You take corrective critism and you don’t argue with the judges.
The ones that are left are there because they were “voted” there by the listeners. Yes, “Light of Doom” will more than likely be the next to go. But they went a hell of a ways. I admire their guts.
I truly feel that Sixwire and The Clark Brothers will go neck and neck. They are professional, versitile and have given their versions of the music given to them with perfection. They made the songs their own without giving anything away. The Denver band will not make it to the final round. They are good, quite good, given they stay within their genre which, given a recording contract of not, they will and will do well. They’ve cut five albums so they know something.
The Clark Brothers took the advise and brought in additional band members. That really made a big difference. They should have kept them, but they are still going to be in the final two.
I truly believe that Sixwire will be on top. They simply are the best in every aspect. The vocals, the harmonies, musical talent, stage presence, original music, they honestly have what it takes. Like it or not, if your favorite doesn’t win, blame the listener, not the color of their skin, the type of music or their looks or what ever other lame excuse you can come up with. To each his own, but you can only have one winner.
